 · Toby’s Room flows on the basis of a dance of doubled characters as it drifts towards the disclosure of a secret, one of several secrets in the story. The most important secret of all is never disclosed to anyone except the reader. It seems that Barker’s mind works by creating a character. And then creating another character to complement the first.  · Toby's Room, written partly in tribute to Woolf – though Barker is not at all like her as a novelist – shows how unsparing and rigorous war art can www.doorway.ruted Reading Time: 7 mins.  · Barker’s method in “Toby’s Room” is the same one she employed in the “Regeneration” trilogy: to use historical characters and events as way points for charting her www.doorway.ruted Reading Time: 6 mins.

The first thing to say is that Toby's Room adds depth and meaning to Life Class. The detached, barely likeable Elinor becomes a much more sympathetic character because of what Barker reveals here. However, like the three books in the Regeneration trilogy, Toby's Room works as a novel in its own right. It is a book about how lives are shattered by war. Toby’s Room is an eloquent literary narrative of hardship and resilience, love and betrayal, and anguish and redemption. In unflinching yet elegant prose, Pat Barker captures the enormity of the war’s impact—not only on soldiers at the front but on the loved ones they leave behind. This is a novel about beautiful art, the people who create it, the subjects within it, and the context behind it. I would class Toby’s Room as a war novel, although the description is rarely centred on conflict. Rather, Barker explores the implications of World War I on life in England, families, relationships, the returned wounded, and art.
